What is your self-image like?

There are many advertisements on television these days that show a glamorous image of both men and women. Adverts for teeth whitening, weight loss, increase stamina, the right car to drive, best neighborhood to live in, the best casino to visit, the best vacation time to have, the list seems endless.

What effect do all of these advertisements have on our emotional well-being?

Well for starters it reminds us that we are not good enough, and therefore to be good enough we will need, this product or that. This car would make us feel better, and look better whereas the others will not. If you want to be appealing to the world around you, you will need to be on a diet and on and on and on!

Are these things even realistic for the everyday person? Can we seriously live up to these expectations?

Now, what about the expectations that we place on ourselves?

When I was growing up, I heard many times over the years, that I was not good enough, I was fat, I was not smart enough, I was wasting my life, I had nothing to offer the world around me, I was a failure.

Please don’t get me wrong, many people loved and encouraged me to be all that I could be and more, but being emotionally sensitive I heard that I was never going to measure up to anyone’s standards.

These thoughts and doubts, fears and lies, held me captive for many years, because I believed every one of those lies to be the truth. I believed that I was not smart enough to do anything of great consequence for people. I believed that if people really got to know the real me, they would discover like I had, that I was a complete and utter failure.

So, I tried to hide my pain and suffering, by eating more, I became a compulsive cleaner, cleaned everything in sight as well as a control freak. I had to control all of my situations so that I would feel good about myself.  I found myself sleeping a lot, as that helped me just to forget or at least temporarily forget the pain that I felt in the depths of my heart.

It was only when I had given my life over to the lord Jesus Christ that I began to discover that the image (idol) that I had built, of who I thought resembled me, actually was not the truth at all.

Those hurts, unkind words and lies that I had believed had kept me in a prison of fear and doubt about myself and my abilities as a person.

The Lord start to unravel those lies when I accepted him as my lord and Savior, the first thing he taught me was that I was now a new creation in him, the old person that I used to be was now dead, and He put His Holy Spirit within me to create a new me.

2 Corinthians 5:17

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!

In the book of Genesis, it tells us of how God created the world and everything in it and when it was all done, he said it was Good.

That meant, that God thought that I was good too, who he had made me to be was good and he was pleased with me.

The next thing that He did was to show me in his word that I was forgiven of all of my sin, and that He no longer held it against me, I was washed clean.

 Colossians 1:21-23

Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior.  But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation— if you continue in your faith, established and firm, not moved from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.

Then he showed me that he really wanted me to be on this earth and that I was very valuable to him,

Ephesians 1: 4-8

For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.  In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding.

 Also Psalm 139 : 13 – 16

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.   My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

As you can see, God sent his son Jesus Christ to be the ultimate sacrifice for my sins and yours as well; he then said that because of that sacrifice I would become a new creation in him, holy and blameless in his sight. He predestined that I would be his daughter from before time began for us, and He even knit me together in my precious mother’s womb.

God showed me that I had been given the gift of the Holy Spirit because I believed in his Son, which was a deposit guaranteeing my eternal hope and future.

Ephesians 1: 13 -14

And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession–to the praise of his glory.

Once he had established in my heart and mind the great love he had for me, and telling me that I was his possession he set about showing me, where my true image of myself needed to be.

I believe that the question that he asked me was this, “How long will you believe the lies of who other people say you are, compared to the truth of who I say you are?”

I had no real answer to that, as I had taken on and built a false image of who I thought I was; media, friends and family had helped erect this enormous idol in my life.

Why would I call it an idol? Because it is what I believed to be true about who I was, and I was not willing to believe God and his word over what I perceived to be the truth.

It was at this point in my walk with the lord that I believe the lord led me to read about many great believers who had walked this road before me, I read how they believed God and because of that unshaking belief, miracles happened, not only in their lives but in the lives of others around them.

I saw how they learned to rely on the Holy Spirit to direct them and bring hope and restoration to their lives as well as the lives of other people. I desired to experience that. So I searched scripture concerning what it meant to be a woman whose heart was totally devoted to God. I wanted to exchange that false image with the one that God was building in my life, with whom he said I was.

I discovered that the bible said, because I was now a believer in Christ Jesus, I was his child, (a princess!!!!). I was an heir with an eternal inheritance. I no longer had to rely on my own abilities and strength to see me through the day; I could and should run to God as he was my stability, (A Rock, a Fortress, a Shelter in times of trouble, Psalm 91).

God showed me that if I would learn to trust in him, I know longer had to rely on my own wisdom, strengths and ability, because I now could trust in him to help me through all situations and therefore, I could do all things through Christ who gave me strength.

I was starting to see, that in myself I was weak, full of fear and doubts, but with Christ living within me, my confidence and abilities, my strength, wisdom, boldness, love, kindness and peace all came from Him. I no longer had to look within myself to be all that I could be.

I can with confidence look to Christ for all of the help, and self-image that I need, as he is changing me daily to become more and more like himself.

I don’t know about you, but that is a way better image than the one that I had created for myself, Christ in me, the hope of my future Glory!

Insurance vs. Assurance

In our day and age you can buy insurance for just about anything, vehicles, pets, and houses, toys (recreational vehicles and the like) and of course life insurance.

All of these insurances are important, and are there to protect you in case of loss, fire, flood, or even death. Insurance companies make millions if not billions of dollars off of the general public each year in premiums that they pay.

The funny thing is, that all the insurance can do and does do is pay out money to replace your lost or stolen item, or gives you a lump some payment in the event of death.

The things that you insure against are all just temporal things here on earth they are things that are destined to pass away with use eventually.

I have to admit that I was glad when the repair man came to fix my washing machine and told me that due to my extended warranty, the motor on my machine was covered. I did do the happy dance for that let me tell you.

It got me thinking, if all that we insure is so important and we pay hundreds of thousands of dollars each year to protect and maintain what we have, surely we should get a better return on our investments.

God on the other hand says that we are not to store up our treasures here on this earth, instead we are to store them up in heaven, where rust and moths and thieves cannot come in and destroy what belongs to us.

 Matthew 6:19-21

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.

But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Please don’t get me wrong, I am not saying that we should just stop insuring all that we own, but what I am saying is that we need to reevaluate what is important to us. Is Christ your treasure, or have you made everything else in your life your treasure.

 1John 2:15 – 17

Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.

The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.

God in his word shows us that we as believers in the Son of God, Jesus Christ, we are to have different priorities than everyone else around us.

The priorities of a Christian should be to love the lord our God with all of our hearts, all of our hearts, all of minds and to love others as ourselves.

This will then lead us to seek God and his will for our lives, and will motivate us to walk in obedience to him and his will for our lives. It will also motivate us to tell others about his glorious and saving grace and that they to can partake in it, if they believe.

You see brothers and sisters, God’s economy works differently to the world and its system, the world would have us believe that we are to store up our treasures here, amass great wealth, toys, cars, homes, vacations and all things that make us feel good. But these things are all temporary and have no lasting eternal impact on our lives.

God assures us, that when we seek him first in our lives, he will add all of those things to our lives; he will provide and help us with living. We don’t have to go running after it.

God assures us that in him all of the treasures for life and eternity are hidden in him.

 Colossians 2:1-3

For I want you to know how great a struggle I have on your behalf and for those who are at Laodicea, and for all those who have not personally seen my face, that their hearts may be encouraged, having been knit together in love, and attaining to all the wealth that comes from the full assurance of understanding, resulting in a true knowledge of God’s mystery, that is, Christ Himself, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

There are many assurances that God gives to us his children that far out weigh anything that we could ever store up here on earth, take a moment and look at some of the treasures that He gives to us in the first chapter of Ephesians

According to Ephesians chapter 1: 3-14

What has Christ Jesus given us as believers?

  • Blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing –
  • Chosen before the world began
  • To be holy and blameless in his sight
  • In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons in Christ Jesus
  • We have been given God’s grace freely in the One he loves
  • We have redemption through his blood
  • Forgiveness of our sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace
  • This grace was lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding
  • We know the mystery of his will – which he purposed in Christ Jesus
  • In Christ all things in heaven and on earth have been brought together under one head, Jesus Christ
  • We have been predestined by God according to the purpose of his will.
  • We have been included with Christ, when we heard the word of truth, the gospel of our salvation.
  • Having believed in Him, you were marked with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit
  • He is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance.
  • Until we are redeemed,
  • We are God’s possession – to the praise of his glory.

Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I would like to encourage you to take a hard look at your life today, examine where you are storing up your treasures, is it on selfish gain, or are you allowing God to work in and through you to impact the world around you?

God assures us, that he will take care of our basic needs, and so much more when we follow him and walk in obedience to his word and will for our lives.

I urge you to give him thanks today for the great assurances that he has given you through his son Jesus Christ, and if you are finding that your priorities are out of sync with God’s best for your life, then lay then down to God and ask him to help you put them in the spot in your life.

That way you will be storing up treasures in heaven, instead of on earth.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ

Have you ever wandered what it really means to be in Christ Jesus? I certainly have and the bible is full of illustrations that speak of this very thing. In the previous two articles in this latest section you can have a look and see many of the promises associated with the fact that we are in Christ Jesus.

I want to talk briefly about a couple of the blessings and promises that are given to us as believers in Jesus Christ. They have come to mean a great deal to me over the years as I have fought the monster of “low self esteem”.

My self esteem was so low that I did not believe that I was capable of doing anything, or have an opinion about anything. I really struggled in this area until God slowly started to build me back up. What do I mean by that, well God through his Holy Spirit, which I have living inside of me as a believer in Christ Jesus, started the process of lovingly showing me that I was loved by him, and that because I was loved, I was given the gift of his Holy Spirit.

Through devouring the scriptures in study, I learnt a fundamental truth that was life altering for me, and this truth in wrapped up neatly in a few verses in the New Testatment.

What is that truth you might wander, well it speaks of what Christ has given me as a gift, and has generously poured into my life. I was so excited, as I realised that in Christ Jesus,  I was capable of so much more than what I had thought possible. The great news is that, that promise is not just for me, but for you to. God through his great love for us, has generously given us everything that we need to live a godly life that is holy, set apart and devoted to Him.

These verses have had such a great impact on my life and my thinking about who I am and what I could do as a child of the Most High God. I pray that it will have the same kind of effect on your life as it has on mine.

1 Corinthians 4-9

4I always thank God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus.
5For in him you have been enriched in every way—in all your speaking and in all your knowledge—
6because our testimony about Christ was confirmed in you.
7Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed
8He will keep you strong to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9God, who has called you into fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful.

Brothers and Sisters, these verses are so important for us to hide in our hearts.

Verse 5 says that we have been enriched in every way, not just a little bit of enrichment, or what he could afford, or a little dab. We have been enriched in Christ Jesus in every way, in our speaking to others about Christ, and in our knowledge, not just on spiritual matters but in every way!

God showed me an important truth in this verse and that is this, we have been called by Him, from before time began, he set us apart to impact the generation that we are now living in. We all have been given different talents and abilities to perform the different tasks that he has set before us to do.

He then poured out through His mighty Holy Spirit, everything that we would need to be able to have the knowledge and wisdom to live our lives, in a way that was not only pleasing to Him but that it brought us fullfilment and an abundant life. That means that we really are capable of way more than what we think we are capable of doing. God has given us the tools to do it.

So why don’t we truly walk in the fullness of His promises to us, unfortunately it is because we do not believe Him. It has been a huge struggle for me to overcome this unbelief in my heart towards God and his promises for me. I have to be honest when I say to you though, that one day I  got tired of living off of the scraps of “just enough” I wanted to believe God for the full enrichment that He promised me as his daughter.

You, my brother and sister have the same promise. You too can rise above the mediocre christian life and be all that God has called you to be. I challenge you to believe Him today, that He truly has given you everything you need for knowledge and speach, and all the spritual blessings that you need. Start living today, like that is a truth. It is and He wants you to believe it and live it.

Rise above, and know that He who is faithful will keep you safe until the day you die, you have nothing to fear and you can in Jesus Christ truly live an abundant, extra ordinary life.

Believe today!

What I am in Christ

What God says He is… He is. What God says I am… I am.
What God says He has… He has. What God says I have… I have.
What God says He can do… He can do. What God says I can do… I can
do.
Therefore by faith in God’s Word and by the blood of Jesus, His
death, burial and resurrection,
I acknowledge, believe, and confess that in Him…….
I am loved, forgiven, cleansed, and released from sin with all its
consequences. I am prosperous, anointed, blest, holy, righteous, free
from condemnation, justified, sanctified and glorified, seated with
the Anointed One, Jesus in heavenly places of power, authority,
privilege and blessing.

I am a son of God, an heir of God and a joint
heir with Jesus Christ. I am His ambassador, His workmanship, His new
creation, a member of the body of Christ, a holy temple for God’s
habitation, a witness, a worshipper, and an effective worker for the
kingdom of heaven.

I am a living sacrifice and a walking, talking
demonstration of God’s amazing wisdom and grace. I am an overcomer.
I have healing, patience, love, boldness, confidence, and full
salvation abounding to me and through me. The riches of God’s glory
and His grace are mine in abundance.

I have God’s life and His Word is in me. His Spirit is in me.

I have joy unspeakable, peace unsurpassable, and love inseparable.

I have the resources and power
of heaven at my disposal. I have everything I need to accomplish
everything God has called me to be and do. I have the will and
strength to do God’s perfect will. I have a destiny of glory and
greatness before me.
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. I can forgive,
love, believe, hope, endure, excel, dream, and become everything God
wants me to do and be. Christ is in me. Jesus lives in me, Jesus
prays through me, witnesses through me, forgives through me, dreams
through me, loves, hopes, gives, serves, overcomes and achieves the
impossible through me.

Hallelujah! Thank you Jesus! To You belongs all glory forever and ever!

I’m Special
I’m special. In all the world there’s nobody like me.
Since the beginning of time, there has never been another person like
me.
Nobody has my smile. Nobody has my eyes, my nose, my hair, my voice.
I’m special.
No one can be found who has my handwriting. Nobody anywhere has my
tastes – for food or music or art.
No one sees things just as I do.
In all of time there’s been no one who laughs like me, no one who
cries like me.
And what makes me laugh and cry will never provoke identical laughter
and tears from anybody else, ever.
No one reacts to any situation just as I would react. I’m special.
I’m the only one in all of creation who has my set of abilities. Oh,
there will always be somebody who is better at one of the things I’m
good at, but no one in the universe can reach the quality of my
combination of talents, ideas, abilities and feelings.
Like a room full of musical instruments, some may excel alone, but
none can match the symphony sound when all are played together. I’m a
symphony.
Through all of eternity no one will ever look, talk, walk, think or
do like me. I’m special. I’m rare.
And in rarity there is great value.
Because of my great rare value, I need not attempt to imitate others.
I will accept – yes, celebrate – my differences. I’m special.
And I’m beginning to realize it’s no accident that I’m special.
I’m beginning to see that God made me special for a very special
purpose.
He must have a job for me that no one else can do as well as I.
Out of all the billions of applicants only one is qualified, only one
has the combination of what it takes.
That one is me. Because, I’m special.
